Presidential Primary – FAQ

PRIMARY DAY: Tuesday, August 11, 2020 (New Date), 6 am to 8 pm

ELECTION DAY: Tuesday, November 3, 2020, 6 am to 8 pm

Will You Be Eligible To Vote In August’s Presidential Primary?

Connecticut’s Presidential Primary date has changed from Tuesday, April 28, 2020 to Tuesday, August 11, 2020 due to public health concerns regarding COVID-19. In order to vote in a Connecticut primary election, our laws require voters to be enrolled in the party holding the primary. If voters wish to switch their party affiliation in order to vote in a new party in the August primary, they must change their affiliation by May 11, 2020 in order to gain voting privileges in the new party.

What About “Unaffiliated” Voters Or “Independent” Voters?

Not sure whether you’re unaffiliated or whether you’re a member of the Independent Party of Connecticut? You can verify your party affiliation on the state’s Look Up tool:

Unaffiliated voters—who have not been enrolled in any party for at least 3 months—may enroll in a political party up to August 6 online or by mail, or by August 10 by noon, in person, at your registrar’s office. If you are a member of the Independent Party of Connecticut and wish to vote in the Presidential Primary of either major party, you must change your affiliation by May 11, 2020.

Eligible citizens can change their party affiliation at .
