Call to order: Gwen Mogenson called the meeting to order at  9:40 a.m. at The Depot

Approval of June 9, 2016 Annual Meeting Minutes: (Gwen Mogenson)

The first order of business was the approval of the June 8, 2016 (Annual Meeting) minutes.  As there were no changes/comments, the members unanimously approved the minutes

Treasurer’s Report: (Antiss Agnew)

Antiss presented the budget report and distributed the financial Statement for 2016-17. She encouraged joining, renewing membership online. She said to see the website for the dues breakdown. The US dues bill has been received and will be paid, awaiting bill for State dues. Historically, we keep less than 10% of local dues

Membership:  (Molly Myers)

  • Membership solicitation not until after Colin McEnroe event. September 22nd.
  • No new members event this fall.
  • Personalization of solicitation materials to be done immediately following the October 5th monthly meeting.  Think of friends you would like to invite to join the league or support us financially with a contribution.
  • Molly and Carla will attend CDSP meeting to promote membership

Fall Kick Off Program: (Karla Coe)  “It’s an Election” featuring WNPR commentator, Colin McEnroe Thursday Sept 22nd Wee Burn Beach Club, in Rowayton. (See invitation).

  • Publicity: Invitations have been mailed to all RTM and town officials, online social media, Patch, Darienite, local papers, fliers to be posted by Karla and Mary Ellen – they will call if additional assistance is needed. Jiim Cameron tweeted link and posted on Channel 79.
  • Arlene encouraged RSVP’s.

Candidates Night, (Nancy Cahoon, Laura Mosher)Tuesday October 25th, 7:00 PM Town Hall Auditorium. Also live and repeat broadcasts on cable channel 79

  • Gwen said this is one of the league’s core events.
  • Moderated by Kay Maxwell.
  • Contested election for State Representative (District 141, Randy Klein vs Terrie Wood) and for State Senator (District 25, Bob Duff vs Greg Ehlers)
  • Several uncontested elections for Darien town positions. ½ of RTM to be elected. To volunteer as a timer, contact Adele Conniff, AConniff00@aol.com
  • Also need volunteers for question collectors and sorters. Contact Nancy Cahoon, Nscahoon@optimum.net

Annual Voters Guide (Mary Genco)

  • Confirmation from Darien Times to publish hard copy Thursday 11/3
  • No on-line publication except for lwv.darien.org
  • Discussion of printing date – members agreed 2 weeks prior to the event
  • Promotion suggestions offered

NOTE: Gwen asked for Volunteers, needed for Election Day – full and ½ day sessions,           training provided (Jim), $10/hr

Darien High School Video Competition (Mogenson)

  • Modeled on similar program run in May by LWV in northern CT. Approved by Darien school administration.
  • Students submit 30 second public service announcement video about the importance of voting. No partisanship or candidate names are allowed. Submission could be individual or team. If team winner, prize money will be split equally. $150 first place, $100 second place, $50 third place.
  • Content pre-vetted by DHS History Dept coordinator, Keith Keeler and DHS video production teacher, Ivan Crowther
  • Submission deadline, Tuesday, October 11th.
  •    Professional judges, suggesting Jim Cameron, Shannon Silsby, and Katie Burke
  • Content run on DHS in house television, cable Ch 798, 79 and posted to lwv.darien.gov website.
  •  LWV to approve prize award funding ($300 total)
  • DHS Student Voter Registration Drive, Thursday October 6, 11:00 AM – 12:30 a.m. Need four (or more) volunteers. Contact Clara Sartori
  • Motion passed to move forward with this event.

Food For Thought (Coe)

Next FFT, Thursday, September 15, 12:30-2:00 PM. Hosted by Ann Ferris, 30 Hale Lane . The topic is not announced. Join a freewheeling discussion of a topical news subject in advance so no preparation is required
