Minutes June 8, 2016

In Attendance: Gwen Mogenson, Laurie Williamson, Clara Sartori, Lois Schneider, Joan Davis, Karen Armour, Mary Genco, Sue Okie, Spike Reed, Bert van Stuelpnagel, Greg Ehlers, Jayme Stevenson, Terrie Wood, Mary Ellen Moore, Enid Oresman, Molly Myers, Martha Banks, Arlene Tulacro, Kate Larson, Nancy Cahoon, Valarie Dodge, & Carolyn Bayne. Invited Speakers: Rep. Terrie Wood and CT Dept of Housing Commissioner Evonne Klein (also League members).

Call to Order: Gwen Mogenson

Gwen Mogenson called the meeting to order at 12:25 p.m. The first order of business was the approval of the May 4, 2016 minutes. As there were no changes/comments, on motion by Kate Larson and seconded by Laurie Williamson, the members unanimously approved the minutes.

Amend Agenda and Approval of April 6, 2016 minutes: Gwen Mogenson

Gwen advised that it was necessary to amend the meeting’s Agenda to include the approval of the April 6, 2016 minutes. Kate Larson moved to amend the Agenda and approve the April minutes. Martha Banks seconded and the members unanimously approved.

Treasurers Report and Membership Vote on the 2016/17 Budget and Board Slate: Kate Larson & Gwen Mogenson

Kate Larson advised that it was recommended to stay the course on the budget. A copy of the proposed budget was included with the Agenda. In the upcoming year the Membership Drive and Finance Drive will both be in September instead of splitting up the fundraisers.

Gwen Mogenson reported that membership had dropped off this year Based on this reality the Board is recommending to budget membership at 115. However, in order to attract members both Membership and Programs will have larger committees. The 2016/17 year will have a kick-off lunch in September.

Ms. Mogenson reported that the proposed Board slate was also included with the Agenda. She also advised that Kate Larson is retiring from the Board, having served since 1995 in almost every position. She will remain as a Director at Large. The members thanked Kate for her tireless efforts over the past 21 years.

Gwen Mogenson requested a motion to approve the 2016/17 Budget and Board slate. Terrie Wood moved to approve, Mary Genco seconded and the members unanimously approved the new budget and Board.

By-Law Changes: Gwen Mogenson

Gwen Mogenson advised that to be in line with State directives it was necessary to change the fiscal year of the Darien League to commence on July 1st with dues also payable on July 1st. Since these changes require a change in the By-Laws, Gwen asked for a motion to approve the By-Law amendments. MaryEllen Moore moved to approve the amendments, Clara Sartori seconded and the members unanimously approved July 1st new fiscal year and dues payable July 1st.

Darien LWV Volunteer of the Year: Gwen Mogenson

Gwen Mogenson congratulated Clara Sartori as the League’s Volunteer of the Year recipient. Ms. Sartori thanked the members and commented that the League was well represented at the ceremony with our members receiving awards in their other volunteer positions.

Recap of 2015-16 League Activities: Gwen Mogenson

Gwen Mogenson recounted the numerous programs and community/voter outreach services the League provided over the past year. The League also assisted the Registrars of Voters in registering 200 Darien HS students.

Thank you’s and Introduction of Speakers: Gwen Mogenson

Gwen Mogenson thanked Sue Okie for opening her home for the meeting and thanked Valerie Dodge and Carolyn Bayne for providing the hospitality.

Gwen reported that invitations were sent to our legislative representatives (Bob Duff, Carlo Leone, William Tong and Terrie Wood) but only Terrie Wood was able to attend.

Gwen then introduced State Representative, Terrie Wood who discussed several pieces of legislation that were proposed and/or passed during the legislative session. Gwen then introduced Evonne Klein, the Department of Housing Commissioner. Ms. Klein reviewed the initiatives her agency is implementing to reduce homelessness and promote affordable housing 8-30 (g).

Adjournment: On motion by Clara Sartori, seconded by Karen Armour, the members voted unanimously to adjourn at 2:05 p.m.
