Minutes for April 4th, 2018

In Attendance:  Laura Mosher, Jean Sweeney, Arlene Tulacro, Martha Banks, Carolyn Bayne, Sue Okie, Enid Oresman, Joan Davis, Mary Genco, Gwen Mogenson, Laurie Williamson, Clara Sartori, Stephanie Maher, Shelly Skoglund, Jill McCammon, Tiffany O’Connor, Rosemary Barberet.

BUSINESS MEETING  – Call to order:  Co-President Clara Sartori called the meeting to order at 9:35 AM, and thanked Co-Secretary Laurie Williamson for February minutes.

Treasurer’s Report:  Stephanie Maher made available a March 31 Financial Statement and reported last two months’ activity was light, except for new bank name, which has no impact on our organization.

Meeting Minutes Approval:  As moved/seconded by Stephanie Maher/Martha Banks, members approved February 7 minutes as amended, with abstentions by those not in attendance.

New Member Outreach:  After brief discussion with Jean Sweeney, all agreed to postpone this event until the Fall.

Fairfield  County LWV Presidents’ Working Session:  Clara Sartori noted this meeting had gone well.

Nominating:    Clara thanked Sue Okie for her work to finalize the slate with the help of several new members. More volunteers are needed for the Secretarial Team.

Darien High School Spring Voter Registration Drive:  Clara reported the next DHS Drive is September 25 (National Voter Registration Day). If DHS Administration also requests an upcoming Spring Drive, both Town Registrars and Darien LWV will coordinate this.

Food for Thought:  In Karla Coe’s absence, Carolyn Bayne reported February and March meetings were well attended and had great discussion.  All are invited to next meeting April 19, 12:30-2 PM, hosted by Ann Ferris, 30 Hale Lane.

League of Women Voters of CT – Public Advocacy Team:  Co-President Gwen Mogenson urged interested members to contact two local members on this State LWV Team:  Martha Banks, who is following Education Funding, and Carolyn Bayne, who is following Water Quality, Solid Waste, and other environmental issues.  Members also are urged to become a “10-minute Activist” by registering to be contacted (with background supplied) by the Public Advocacy Team when input is needed.

Upcoming Events:  Our annual Town Officials Forum, coordinated by Martha Banks, will be co-sponsored with Darien Library, Wed., Apr. 18, Library Auditorium, 6:30 PM Reception, 7 PM Program.

Darien LWV will co-sponsor with Darien Land Trust, free and open to the public, the film “An Inconvenient Sequel” at Darien Library,  Sunday, Apr. 22 (Earth Day).

Given the weather cancellation of the March meeting, the Darien LWV will re-invite Craig Flaherty, Chair of the Energy and Recycling Advisory Committee, for a future presentation.

Observer Corps Light Speaker:  Members welcomed Emily Larkins, Thriving Youth Program Director at the Community Fund of Darien (communityfunddarien.org.  See also: ourdarien.com).  She discussed the goals of their grant-making and community initiatives (part of a 5 year strategic plan) to reduce underage drinking and improve mental health for Darien’s 12-17 year-olds and their parents.  Two upcoming events feature “Smart Approaches to Marijuana” (SAM), led by a Ph.D., on May 8 in New Canaan, and  May 15, 7PM, Darien Library (“Addiction, Treatment, and our Community”).

Next LWV Meetings:  Next business meeting is Wednesday, May 2. End-of-year Annual Meeting date is to be announced.

Subsequent to the April 4th meeting, the Town Officials Forum was rescheduled to Wed May 9th, 7:00 PM at the Board of Education Community Room (35 Leroy Avenue)

The film “An Inconvenient Sequel was shown on Thursday, April 26th
