January 9, 2019 Minutes

In attendance: Amy Zerbe, Clara Sartori, Millyn Gaaserud, Martha Banks, Mary Genco, Shelly Skoglund, Stacey Tie, Theresa Vogt, Sue Okie, Kate Larson, Laura Mosher, Joan Davis, Jean Sweeney, Stephanie Maher, Tiffany O’Connor, Deepika Saksena

Call to Order:  Clara Sartori called the meeting to order at 9:40 AM.  Clara made a motion to amend the agenda to add Nominating Committee to the agenda.  Shelly Skoglund accepted the motion, Martha Banks seconded the motion.

Darien Historical Society: Maggie McIntire, Executive Director of the Darien Historical Society, gave a presentation on the organization’s current exhibition, About Time.  The exhibition focuses on the work of artist Margaret Brassler Kane.

Treasurers Report:  Stephanie Maher noted that we have $16K in our cash account.  She asked if members had submitted all of their expenses.

  • Membership Renewals: 94 members have renewed; 30 have not at this time. Gwen will send out reminders.  It is important to renew membership now, as we must update and report our membership database by January 31st.  Our State and National Dues are calculated based upon our membership numbers.

Food for Thought: The date of the January meeting is TBD.  Hosted by Ann Ferris, 30 Hale Lane.  All members are invited.

Observer Corps Light:

  • We discussed BYO Darien and its mission to ban plastic bags in town. We discussed other towns that have already banned plastic bags.
  • Mary, Martha and Kate volunteered to write questions for our upcoming legislative coffee.
  • Clara asked if members had ideas for future speakers at our meetings. Deepika volunteered to speak about pollinator parkways.

Save the Dates:

  • Sunday January 27th – Darien LWV sponsors a showing of the documentary RBG (Ruth Bader Ginsberg) at Darien Library 2:00 PM. Free and open to the public.
  • Wednesday, January 30th 9:00-11:00 AM, Our Annual Legislative Coffee, hosted by Millyn Gaaserud, 35 Driftway in Tokeneke. Members and guests only.
    • Join our State General Assembly Elected Officials in a small group, focused discussion of pertinent issues.
    • Attendees include: State Senators Bob Duff and Carlo Leone and State Representatives Terrie Wood and possibly newly elected Representative Matthew Blumenthal.

Nominating:  Stacey, Sue, and Shelly are starting the nominating process. They would like one more member on their committee.  Officers should send Stacey job descriptions.

Stacey Tie moved to adjourn the meeting.  Shelly Skoglund seconded the motion.  The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 AM.
