LWV’s Ask “How Can We Turn Washington Green?”

The Darien League of Women Voters is sponsoring an educational forum to address federal initiatives, impasses and action plans relating to environmental issues on Friday, February 1 at the Darien Town Hall .The focus will be on climate change. The speakers will include Congressman Christopher Shays (R) Connecticut’s Fourth District and Rafe Pomerance, President of Clean Air – Cool Planet and founder of its Climate Policy Center located in Washington D.C.

Clean Air – Cool Planet (CA-CP) is an independent, non partisan organization established to develop policies to counter global warming. Clean Air-Cool Planet’s goal is to combine civil engagement and constituency building at the local and regional levels with national policy design and analysis to address climate change. The Climate Policy Center of CA-CP is currently pursuing research and education in five areas.

  • Designing a cost-effective cap and trade system

  • Strengthening US climate-energy research and development

  • Designing a national approach to adapting to climate change

  • Raising the profile of climate change in the 2008 presidential election

  • Focusing on slowing the impact of climate change in the Circumpolar Artic

Mr. Pomerance is a native of Greenwich and a graduate of Brunswick School and Cornell University. He served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment and Development from1993-1999 at which time he helped negotiate the Kyoto Protocols. He is also former President of the Friends of the Earth and founder and former Chairman of the Board of American Rivers and former Chairman of the Board of the League of Conservation Voters.

Congressman Christopher Shays has served the fourth district for 20 years. In 2007 he reintroduced the Energy for Our Future Act (H.R. 1945). This legislation has three goals for national energy policy: improving the fuel efficiency of passenger vehicles; creating incentives for the purchase of energy-efficient appliances; and repealing tax breaks for certain profitable industries. He has been designated a “Lifetime Hero” and a “2006 Environmental Champion” by the League of Conservation Voters.

Doors will open at 9:00 a.m. for coffee at Town Hall. Speakers will begin at 9:30

a.m. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the program.
